The 5th generation Toyota Supra with the A90 index made its debut on January 14, 2019, at the International Detroit Auto Show. The development of the model lasted for several years, and colleagues from BMW helped the Japanese engineers in building the coupe. In fact, the new model is a direct relative of the Bavarian roadster Z4 (G29).
The manufacturer refers to the fifth-generation car as the GR Supra, where “GR” is an abbreviation for “Gazoo Racing” (the sports division of the Japanese brand).
Toyota Supra is a rear-wheel-drive sports car of the “compact segment” and the first global product of the sports division of the Japanese automaker. It is capable of boasting elegant design, a modern interior with a two-seat layout, and an innovative technical component. This sports coupe is addressed, first of all, to successful enthusiasts who want to get the most out of driving.
All Supra models come with rear-wheel drive only. Despite its performance potential, the Supra’s suspension is soft enough to drive on a daily basis. Its steering is precise, balanced, and direct to enhance its driving personality. The low-cost four-cylinder model is new for 2021 and accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.7 seconds.
The Toyota Supra offers a choice of two aluminum petrol engines which are combined with an 8-speed hydromechanical “automatic”, rear-wheel-drive transmission, and an active differential with overdrive planetary gears.
The first option is a 2.0-liter B48 four-cylinder unit with in-line architecture, turbocharging, direct fuel injection, a 16-valve DOHC timing belt, and variable valve timing. It is available in two boost levels: 197 hp at 4500-6500 rpm and 320 lb-ft of torque at 1450-4200 rpm; 258 HP at 5000-6500 rpm and 400 lb-ft of torque potential at 1550-4400 rpm.
The “top-end” versions are armed with an in-line 3.0-liter V6 BMW B58 with a two-flow turbocharger, “direct” fuel injection, intake and exhaust phase shifters, and a 32-valve timing structure, which generates 340 hp at 5000-6500 rpm and 500 lb-ft of available thrust at 1600-4500 rpm.
The Supra steering is confident and responsive, the car handles nimbly around corners, and body lean is minimal in tight corners. Plus, its brakes can slow the car down. However, there is a difference in ride quality between the 2.0 and 3.0 models.
The Supra 3.0 has an adaptive suspension that can quickly reinforce and cushion shock absorbers, allowing the vehicle to comfortably tackle bumps and gradients without losing control. Supra 2.0 is not offered with this setting. Bumpy roads are still enjoyable to drive, but without these adaptive dampers, you’ll experience even more shock and shock.
The driver-centered cab is tight, and the double-bubble roof provides extra headroom, but taller drivers will feel pinched down.
The Supra is designed for two with 42.2 inches of legroom. Rear hatch cargo volume is 10.2 cubic feet, 3-4 cubic feet less than the 718 Cayman, M2, and Mustang.
Toyota Supra is a two-seater sports car. Its comfortable seats are comfortable but comfortable enough for long journeys. The seats are comfortable too, and there is ample head and leg room for taller car visitors. The typical package includes leather upholstery and manually adjustable seats. You also can choose the option of heated and electrically adaptable seats.
On the other hand, the Supra’s windows are small and the roof pillars are thick. They restrict visibility from the sides and back, and the low rooftop causes an uncomfortable feeling.
Toyota calls this system with an 8.8-inch infotainment display Supra Command, but it is essentially a BMW iDrive setup. The menus are simple and the graphics are crisp. It’s fairly easy to use while driving, thanks in part to the physical buttons and knobs for sound and climate controls. An update to the available navigation system adds touch sensitivity to the screen and support for Apple CarPlay. Android Auto is not available.
Standard infotainment features:
Available infotainment features:
Additional standard features are keyless entry, button start, dual-zone automatic climate control.
There are 4 trims of Supra available: base 2.0, 3.0, 3.0 Premium, and A91 Edition. The base-level auto is driven by the 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder (255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque). If choosing 3.0, 3.0 Premium, and A91 Edition, you get a 3.0L turbo inline V6 (382 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque). 8-speed automatic transmission and RWD remain standard for both motors.
The A91 Edition trim lacks the premium head-up display but adds:
For models 2.0 and 3.0, the Security and Technology Pack adds:
The Driver Assist package adds the aforementioned safety equipment to the Premium and A91 Edition models.
